January 29, 2024 (MLN): Pakistan’s mobile phone industry is booming, and the country is targeting to export smartphones worth $500 million in the next two years and a staggering $5 billion in the next five years, Federal Minister of IT & Telecom Dr. Umar Saif highlighted at the Pakistan Mobile Summit held in collaboration with Techno Mobile.
The Pakistan Mobile Summit 2024 was organized under the Ministry of IT & Telecom and mobile phone manufacturers.
Dr Umar Saif compared the industry with India, which exports mobile phones worth $10bn annually, expressing confidence in boosting Pakistan’s presence in the global mobile phone market.
"Steps are being taken to increase the export of smartphones manufactured in Pakistan," he said.
The minister revealed that 35 companies have been licensed to assemble smartphones of different brands, and that a policy is being formulated to produce complete phones and some parts locally.
He added that around 90m mobile phones have been assembled in two years, and almost 0.25m mobile phones worth $15m have been exported.
