Mutual Funds Industry emerges as the largest net seller of securities in 2019

January 2, 2020 (MLN): The Foreign Investors bought securities worth Rs. 214.3 billion, and sold securities worth Rs. 206.3 billion during the year 2019. This resulted in net buying of Rs. 7.9 billion, which in terms of USD translates into $55.7 million.

Amongst these investors, Foreign Corporates emerged as the largest net buyers as their investment in securities amounted to Rs. 4.3 billion, or $32.7 million.

Overseas Pakistanis lagged just a little behind as their net investment in securities totaled Rs. 3.78 billion, or $24.1 million.  

In a similar fashion, the local investors bought securities worth Rs. 2.06 trillion and sold securities worth Rs. 2.07 trillion. This resulted in net selling of Rs. 7.9 billion or $55.7 million.

Amongst the local investors, Mutual Funds sold securities worth Rs. 25.3 billion, thus emerging as the largest net sellers. It is pertinent to mention here that the selling of securities by the Mutual Funds industry was a lot higher before the KSE-100 index touched an all-time low on August 16, 2019. Going by the data available at NCCPL’s website, the securities sold by Mutual Funds before this point amounted to Rs. 88.3 billion.

On the other hand, local individuals took the forefront in terms of net buying, with net investment in securities of Rs. 24 billion.
