Bank deposit rate falls by 29bps in Jun

July 20, 2026 (MLN): The return on bank deposits has decreased by 29 basis points to 4.05% in June 2026 compared to the deposit rate of 4.34% last month, according to the latest official data.

On a yearly basis, the weighted average rate paid for deposits by the banking sector has decreased by 872bps compared to the return of 12.77% last year.

Meanwhile, the lending rate for all scheduled banks stood at 12.03%, down 15bps compared to May. While it rose 36bps compared to the same month of last year.

Accordingly, the banking sector spread increased by 14bps to 799bps in June 2026 compared to a spread of 784bps last month.

After adjusting for inflation, the real deposit rate remained in negative territory at minus 2.99% in June, deteriorating from minus 2.06% in May and minus 1.14% recorded a year earlier.

In contrast, the real lending rate eased to 4.99% in June from 5.79% in the preceding month and 7.17% in June 2025, reflecting a gradual moderation in borrowing costs in real terms.
