October 30, 2023 (MLN): The caretaker federal government on Monday decided to revise the gas tariff for captive power producers with effect from November 01, 2023, sources close to the matter told Mettis Global.
For this purpose, the ministry has reproduced the summary for gas rate hikes for Captive power producers which will be presented again at the ECC meeting tomorrow.
It is important to mention that the earlier decision of ECC pertaining to the approval of gas price hike could not be implemented.
At present, captive power producers are receiving 145 MMCFD of gas at cheaper rates.
To note, industry tariffs are set so as to rationalize the gas prices in the North and South regions and create a level playing field for everyone.
Petroleum division in consultation with stakeholders has developed a Regionally Competitive Energy Tariff (RCET) considering the industry in India, Bangladesh and Vietnam, which have developed themselves and emerged as net exporters.
The division envisages to discourage captive usage by export and non-export customers and has kept their prices higher than the process.
In addition, demand destruction measures are focused on the conservation of gas in sectors where gas use is inefficient, unbridled or where alternate fuels are available.
More than 50% of the commercial category consumers in the country already use LNG. More than 27% of the gas connections in the CNG category are RLNG-based.
The efficiency-adjusted cost of CNG is almost half of that of Petrol in equivalent terms.
A glimpse of proposed new prices is tabulated below:
