Govt borrows Rs324bn debt in a week

March 24, 2025 (MLN): The government of Pakistan has acquired an additional debt of Rs324.42 billion during the week ended March 14, 2025, which brings its total net borrowing for ongoing fiscal year 2025 to Rs294.98bn, according to the central bank's weekly estimates.

The government sector borrowings are divided into three broad categories based on the purpose of the loan which are budgetary support, commodity operations, and others.

Split three ways between these broad categories, the weekly net borrowing for budgetary support was Rs353.82bn, while the retirement off commodity operations stood at Rs28.2bn.

Meanwhile, a total of Rs1.2bn was retired off others during the week.

Accordingly, this takes the cumulative borrowing for the current fiscal year 2025 to Rs599.37bn for budgetary support, Rs303.63bn retirement off Commodity Operations, and Rs0.75bn retirement off others.

The two biggest sources of financing for budgetary support are the State Bank of Pakistan and the scheduled banks.

This fiscal year, the government has paid off a net sum of Rs464.65bn to the central bank, out of which the Federal Government borrowed Rs116.72bn whereas, the Provincial Government retired Rs529.34bn, AJK Government retired Rs39.11bn, and the GB Government retired Rs12.93bn.

On the other hand, the government has lent out a net total of Rs1.06tr to scheduled banks. Out of this amount, the Federal Government borrowed Rs1.27tr while the Provincial Government retired Rs206.25bn.
