PM Shehbaz courts Chinese investment in energy, EV, pharma sectors

May 25, 2026 (MLN): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has arrived in Beijing following the conclusion of his official engagements in Hangzhou, where he is set to hold high-level meetings with Chinese leadership, including President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang, aimed at advancing cooperation under CPEC Phase-II and strengthening Pakistan–China economic and strategic ties.
During his stay in Hangzhou, the Prime Minister led a
series of focused interactions with leading Chinese corporate executives across
key sectors, including renewable energy, electric mobility, energy storage and
pharmaceuticals, as part of broader efforts to attract investment and deepen
business-to-business cooperation.
He engaged with Agnes Siu, CEO of Sheng Huo Neng Yuan Ke
Ji Company, where discussions centered on expanding collaboration in the
renewable energy sector, according to the press release.
The Prime Minister highlighted Pakistan’s growing clean
energy demand and outlined government initiatives designed to facilitate
investment, particularly in solar power projects.
In a separate meeting with Oscar Luo, Executive President
of CATL, discussions focused on advanced battery technologies, energy storage
systems, and integrated solar solutions to support Pakistan’s transition toward
clean and sustainable energy.
He also met Danwei Shao, Chairwoman of StarCharge, where
talks revolved around the development of electric vehicle charging
infrastructure and smart mobility systems in Pakistan.
Additionally, Mr. Xin Yuan, President of Xiuzheng
Pharmaceutical Group, called on the Prime Minister to explore cooperation in
pharmaceutical manufacturing, healthcare services, and potential investment
opportunities in Pakistan’s expanding medical sector.
The Prime Minister also visited the headquarters of
Alibaba Group, where he was received by Executive Chairman Joe Tsai, further
reinforcing engagement with major Chinese technology enterprises.
Across all meetings, both sides discussed opportunities
for increased investment in Pakistan, including the establishment and expansion
of manufacturing facilities.
The Prime Minister underscored Pakistan’s
investment-friendly policies, ease of doing business reforms, and the
importance of strengthening direct business-to-business linkages between
Pakistani and Chinese enterprises.
The visit comes as Pakistan and China mark the 75th
anniversary of diplomatic relations, underscoring the long-standing strategic
partnership between the two countries.
