UAE, UN deepen ties on energy, water agenda

May 25, 2026 (MLN): Abdulla Balalaa, Assistant Minister for Energy and Sustainability Affairs, held discussions with Amina J. Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, on enhancing collaboration between the UAE and the UN in key areas including energy, sustainability, and water security.

Both sides reviewed ongoing efforts by the UAE to deepen international cooperation on sustainable development through practical partnerships, innovative approaches, and initiatives aimed at accelerating global progress on shared priorities.

A key focus of the meeting was the upcoming 2026 United Nations Water Conference, which the UAE will co-host with the Republic of Senegal in Abu Dhabi from 8 to 10 December 2026, according to APP.

The event is expected to act as a major global platform to drive implementation, mobilize financing and partnerships, and elevate water-related issues within the broader sustainable development agenda by converting political momentum into concrete action.

Balalaa reaffirmed the UAE’s strong commitment to working closely with the United Nations and global partners to ensure the success of the conference and its outcomes.

He also highlighted the UAE’s openness to international investment and cooperation in the water sector, particularly in areas such as water resilience, innovation, sustainable management, and scalable solutions that support long-term progress.

He further stressed the importance of strengthening multilateral collaboration to address global water challenges, noting that water is fundamental to climate resilience, food security, economic development, and overall sustainability.

He underscored the UAE’s focus on an action-oriented approach that brings together governments, international organizations, financial institutions, the private sector, and other stakeholders to deliver measurable impact.

The discussions reflected the strong partnership between the UAE and the United Nations, as well as their shared commitment to advancing practical, inclusive, and solution-driven cooperation in support of global sustainability goals, particularly Sustainable Development Goal 6.
