PKR maintains upward momentum vs USD

May 25, 2026 (MLN): The Pakistani rupee continued its upward trajectory against the US dollar on Monday, edging higher in the interbank market as the local currency settled at PKR 278.51 per USD a gain of 1.21 paisa over the previous session's close of 278.52.

During intraday trading, the rupee fluctuated between a high of 278.94 and a low of 278.55, showing cautious but steady sentiment among market participants.

In the open market, exchange companies offered the dollar at 278.50 for buying and 279.55 for selling.

While the rupee strengthened against the greenback, it faced headwinds against major European and Asian currencies.

The local unit shed 77.97 paisa (0.24%) against the Euro, closing at 324.06, and lost 1.49 rupees (0.40%) versus the British Pound, ending the session at 375.48.

Against the Swiss Franc, the rupee declined 1.84 rupees (0.52%) to 356.08, while it weakened 0.16 paisa (0.09%) against the Japanese Yen, closing at 1.7519.

The rupee also softened 6.56 paisa (0.16%) against the Chinese Yuan to close at 41.05, and slipped marginally by 0.47 paisa against the Saudi Riyal, settling at 74.22. However, it managed a slight recovery of 0.64 paisa against the UAE Dirham, closing at 75.83.

The broader trend paints an encouraging picture for the rupee. Since the start of the current fiscal year, the PKR has appreciated by 5.25 rupees (1.89%) against the US dollar a notable sign of macroeconomic stabilization.

On a calendar year basis, the currency has gained 1.61 rupees (0.58%), reinforcing the positive momentum.

In the money market, the benchmark 6-month Karachi Interbank Bid and Offer (KIBOR) rates eased slightly, dipping 3 basis points to 12.31% and 12.56% respectively, signaling a modest softening in short-term borrowing costs.
