April 25, 2025 (MLN): Pakistan's short-term inflation decreased by 1.92% compared to the previous week, while it fell by 3.52% compared to the same period last year, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported on Friday.
During the week, out of 51 items, prices of 11 (21.57%) items increased, 18 (35.29%) items decreased and 22 (43.14%) items remained stable
The SPI for the current week ended on April 24, 2025 decreased by 1.92%. Major decrease is observed in the prices of Electricity Charges for Q1 (19.17%), Chicken (11.75%), Wheat Flour (5.68%), Garlic (4.66%), Bananas (3.51%), Onions (1.93%), Rice IRRI-6/9 (1.58%), Mustard Oil (1.10%), LPG (1.09%) and Tomatoes (0.76%).
On the other hand, increase is observed in the prices of Potatoes (6.94%), Eggs (0.66%), Salt Powder & Cigarettes (0.51%) each, Gur (0.37%), Curd (0.18%), Pulse Masoor (0.09%), Long Cloth (0.08%), Pulse Gram (0.07%) and Lawn Printed (0.06%).
The year on year trend depicts decrease of 3.52%, Onions (69.78%), Tomatoes (40.77%), Garlic (31.96%), Wheat Flour (30.70%), Electricity Charges for Q1 (29.40%), Tea Lipton (16.98%), Potatoes (16.93%), Chilies Powder (15.69%), Pulse Mash (15.62%), Petrol (13.24%) and Diesel (10.85%).
On the other hand, major increase is observed increase in the prices of Ladies Sandal (55.62%), Pulse Moong (26.85%), Powdered Milk (23.11%), Pulse Gram (21.08%), Beef (18.64%), Sugar (16.14%), Vegetable Ghee 2.5 Kg (15.45%), Vegetable Ghee 1 Kg (14.50%), Cooked Daal (12.77%), Firewood (10.49%), Lawn Printed (10.33%) and Georgette (9.90%).
The lowest income group experienced a weekly decrease of 1.81%, while the inflation for the highest income group up by 1.92%.
On a yearly basis, analysis of SPI change across different income segments showed that SPI remained across all quantiles ranging between 4.54% and 2.68%.
Yearly SPI for the Lowest Income Group decreased by 3.85% while the highest income group decreased by 3.52%.
The average price of Sona urea stood at Rs4,488 per 50 kg bag, up by 0.09% from last week’s price, and a 9.30% decrease from last year.
Meanwhile, the average Cement price rose to Rs1,410 per 50 kg bag, which is 0.03% higher than the previous week, and 15.81% higher than prices last year.
PBS calculates short-term inflation using the SPI on a weekly basis to assess the price movement of essential commodities at shorter interval of time so as to review the price situation in the country.
SPI comprises 51 essential items collected from 50 markets in 17 cities of the country.
