Foreign currency deposits rise by $69m in August 2026

September 12, 2026 (MLN): Foreign currency deposits rose by $69.39m to $6.935 billion in August 2026 compared to the previous month, the latest data released by the State Bank of Pakistan showed.

On a year-on-year basis, total deposits declined by $69.69m or 0.99% compared to $7.004bn in August 2025.

According to the data, foreign currency deposits by residents stood at $5.865bn during the month under review, representing an increase of $13.79m or 0.24% compared to $5.851bn reported in the previous month.

On a year-on-year basis, resident deposits fell by $242.75m or 3.97% from $6.108bn in August 2025.

Meanwhile, non-resident deposits climbed to $1.070bn in August 2026, an increase of $55.60m or 5.48% compared to $1.014bn in July 2026.

Year-on-year, non-resident deposits climbed by $173.06m or 19.30% from $896.48m in August 2025.

The resident deposits comprised $2.017bn in demand deposits, $1.702bn in savings deposits, and $2.146bn in time deposits.

Non-resident deposits consisted of $643.83m in demand deposits, $217.38m in savings deposits, and $208.33m in time deposits.

As these deposits help to finance large fiscal and external current account deficits, during the month $920.78m was utilized for pre-shipment financing, $157.59m for post-shipment financing, and $977.26m for import financing.

Further, $1.373bn was placed with SBP and Pakistani banks, of which $411.91m was placed under CRR requirements, $698.07m under SCRR requirements, $20.49m with banks within Pakistan, and $242.45m with banks outside Pakistan.

Additionally, $431.98m were held as balances abroad, while $236.10m remained as cash in hand.
