May 07, 2024 (MLN): Following a meeting today with the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), the telecom operators refrained from providing assurances regarding the blocking of SIM cards on the back of various technical and operational challenges alongside legal complexities in its execution.

During the discussions, telecom operators emphasized additional hurdles beyond legal considerations that may impede the seamless implementation of the SIM-blocking initiative.

These concerns underscored the intricate nature of the task and the need for comprehensive planning to address technical intricacies and operational logistics effectively.

Another meeting will be organised later to discuss the way forward.

Last week, the FBR mandated that mobile phone connections of non-filers of income tax returns can be terminated anytime.

FBR issued an Income Tax General Order (ITGO) in respect of individuals who do not appear on the active taxpayer list but are obligated to file Income Tax Returns for the Tax Year 2023.

Under the authority vested by section 114B of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001, FBR has taken decisive action by issuing an order to disable mobile phone SIMs associated with 506,671 individuals who fall under the aforementioned category.

These measures are aimed at encouraging individuals to fulfil their tax obligations and contribute to the country's economic development.
