May 14, 2025 (MLN): Petrol prices are expected to drop by approximately Rs3.5 per litre due to a decline in international rates, with revised prices likely to be effective from May 16 to 31, 2025.

The federal government is expected to announce a moderate reduction in petroleum product prices on May 15, offering some relief to consumers as international oil prices ease.

The anticipated reduction in petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD) prices is driven by a $1.5 per barrel drop in the international price of petrol and a $3 per barrel decline in HSD over the past two weeks.

Currently, the ex-depot price stands at Rs252.63 per litre for petrol and Rs256.64 per litre for HSD.

This expected adjustment follows recent trends in global oil markets and includes a marginal reduction in the import premium on petrol, contributing to the overall decrease in domestic fuel prices.

To recall, in the last fortnight, the government kept the price of petrol unchanged at Rs254.63 per litre.

Similarly, the price of High-Speed Diesel (HSD) was last revised to Rs258.64 per litre in the previous fortnight.

Petrol is a key fuel for private transport, small vehicles, motorcycles, and rickshaws, making its price highly impactful on the budgets of middle and lower-middle income households.

High-speed diesel, used widely in heavy transport vehicles, agricultural machinery, buses, and trains, plays a critical role in shaping inflation trends, particularly for essential commodities like vegetables and other food items.

With the government set to adjust prices for the upcoming fortnight, anticipation grows for the official announcement, which may provide relief to consumers and boost economic activity in the transport and agriculture sectors.
