July 21, 2022 (MLN): The Pakistan Business Council (PBC) on Thursday emphasized the unity of all the political parties of the country in challenging times wherein the economy is going through its roughest patch.
Unless all parties unite on a National Economic Agenda, the economy will remain in a free fall. In a series of tweets, PBC said, “If there is ever a time when all political parties need to unite, it is now.”
The survival of the country’s solvency and sovereignty is at stake. There are now no alternatives to IMF and all parties must commit to it.
“The IMF will help us survive, not thrive,” it added.
In order to thrive, the council underlined the need for cross-party consensus on at least a five-year program of fundamental reforms including taxes, NFC, energy, SOEs, agriculture, water, and exports
That leaves many areas where parties can differ, but not on these essentials.
PBC further pointed out that industries are standing on the verge of closures and layoffs due to the lack of essential imports.
Those at the bottom of the pyramid will suffer most, it warned.
