NEPRA lowers electricity prices across Pakistan

March 06, 2025 (MLN): The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has declared a reduction in electricity prices for consumers across the country under the monthly fuel cost adjustment mechanism.

As per the latest notification from NEPRA, the price of electricity for K-Electric (KE) consumers in Karachi has been reduced by Rs3 per unit under the December 2024 monthly adjustment, which will be applied in the March 2025 billing cycle.

For consumers in the rest of the country, electricity rates have been decreased by Rs2.12 per unit under the January 2025 monthly adjustment, with the relief also being reflected in March 2025 electricity bills.

The notification states that the negative Fuel Cost Adjustment (FCA) of Rs3 per unit is being allowed provisionally, subject to future adjustments based on the Multi-Year Tariff (MYT) determination for 2024-30.

Any cost differences arising from the MYT will be accounted for in future modifications once officially notified.

The reduction in December 2024's FCA will be applicable to all KE consumer categories except lifeline consumers, domestic protected consumers, Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (EVCS), and prepaid electricity consumers.

It will be displayed separately in consumers’ bills based on their units consumed, and in cases where March 2025 bills are issued before this notification, the adjustment may be applied in a subsequent month, the notice added.

Furthermore, KE has been directed to implement the Winter Demand Initiative decision dated December 6, 2024, if applicable.

The fuel charges adjustment must strictly comply with court orders, ensuring legal adherence in its application.
