July 16, 2025 (MLN): Development of Gwadar
into a modern, integrated maritime and logistics hub remains a key priority to
support Pakistan’s economic ambitions and uplift the socio-economic landscape
of the region.
This vision was reaffirmed by Federal
Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry during a detailed
briefing by Gwadar Port Authority Chairman Noor ul Haque, who updated him on
the port’s operational performance, ongoing projects, and future business plans, said a press release issued today.
The Minister emphasized the importance of
enhancing Gwadar’s connectivity and streamlining port operations to attract
greater maritime traffic and investment, ultimately positioning the port as a
pivotal gateway for regional trade
Among the key developments discussed is the
establishment of an off-dock terminal near the New Gwadar International Airport.
A 100-acre site has already been allocated
for this strategic project, which will serve as a critical node for cargo and
container handling.
With a projected cost of Rs497 million, the
terminal is expected to be completed within one year.
It aims to significantly reduce demurrage
costs, enhance operational confidence and boost revenue generation through
Gwadar Port.
The facility will also offer cost-effective
logistical solutions for landlocked Central Asian states such as Uzbekistan,
Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.
This will position Gwadar as a regional
trade gateway.
The Minister reaffirmed his commitment to
realising Gwadar’s full potential as a driver of connectivity, trade and
socio-economic progress.
He emphasised the need for on-ground
reforms that prioritise efficiency, inclusivity and national pride while urging
swift action to enhance port performance and support long-term development.
Highlighting the vast untapped promise of
Balochistan’s coastal and agricultural regions, the Minister underscored
investment opportunities in fishing and date farming across Gwadar, Panjgur and
Kech.
It
was noted that the Makran coast contributes 40% of Pakistan’s fish catch, while
Kech and Panjgur produce over half of the country’s high-quality dates.
Yet,
due to the absence of value-addition facilities, 30–40% of post-harvest produce
is lost curtailing export competitiveness.
The Minister urged both public and private
stakeholders to invest in modern processing infrastructure including fish
cleaning, freezing and packaging facilities, as well as plants for grading,
drying and producing date syrups and jams.
He
also stressed the urgent need for cold storage and integrated logistics
networks to support consistent, high-value exports.
The Minister also visited the China
Business Center, where he received briefings on the Gwadar Port, free zone,
Gwadar International Terminal and associated infrastructure projects.
Expressing satisfaction over the progress
made, he instructed relevant authorities to expedite efforts and implement
critical improvements to sustain development momentum.
