Minister stresses devising well-coordinated strategy to meet climate change challenges

Caretaker Minister for Interior and Narcotics Control Muhammad Azam Khan Wednesday stressed devising a coordinated strategy in collaboration with international organizations to meet the common challenges of climate change.

Addressing the inaugural session of two day International Conference titled ‘Capitalizing on Pakistan’s Experience in handling disasters, creating synergies among global frameworks lessons learnt and the way forward’, he said

Pakistan is fully committed to play its role in serving humanity facing disasters. Pakistan was committed to reduce disaster risks and strengthen the organizations managing disasters.

Interior Minister said Pakistan has incurred huge losses due to natural calamities; however, it is now fully capable to deal with such situations through lessons learnt.

Government was committed to help NDMA in reducing disaster risks. He lauded National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) for hosting such an important conference for countering disasters and reducing risks.

He said disaster management is focus of Pakistan and mechanism was being devised for playing leading role in this regard as Pakistan has been vulnerable to disasters. Pakistan has made significant progress in managing disasters.

The two days disaster discussion would help devising a common strategy to cope with disasters.

Speaking on the occasion, Chairman National Disaster Management Authority Lt Gen Umer Mehmood Hayat said the disaster management system in the country has been improved. He said the system has been playing an important role in proving first hand aid to the people affected by disasters.                                                                                                    

UNDP Country Director Pakistan Ignacio Artaza assured UN support for policies that target both natural resource management and climate change mitigation at national, provincial and community levels. 

Highlighting natural beauty in Pakistan, Swiss Ambassador to Pakistan Thomas Kolly said Pakistan is playing an important role in dealing with floods and other calamities in the region.
