FBR seizes Rs754m worth of smuggled goods

May 05, 2023 (MLN): In continuation with the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR)' policy of crackdown against smugglers, customs intelligence in yet another successful operation seized Rs754 million worth of essential commodities, dry fruits, cigarettes, Indian-origin gutka, and shisha flavor, a press release showed.

To appreciate the successful anti-smuggling operations in various parts of the country, the Chairman of the FBR, Mr. Asim Ahmad, visited the customs intelligence headquarters in Islamabad.

The seized items, worth Rs754m were during just the last 4 days of the week, these anti-smuggling operations were conducted by the directorate general of intelligence and investigation- customs in the province of Baluchistan, Rawalpindi/Islamabad, and Karachi.

In pursuance of the directions of the Prime Minister of Pakistan to launch a crackdown against the smuggling of essential items from Pakistan to the neighboring countries, credible information was shared by the Director General Customs Intelligence, Mr Faiz Ahmad Chadhar with the Directorate of Customs Intelligence, Gwadar that a huge quantity of Pak Origin Fertilizer Urea and Sugar are dumped at different premises /godowns in and around Khuzdar City, for onwards smuggling from Baluchistan to Afghanistan.

In the wake of the instruction of the director general, the Director of custom intelligence, Gwadar constituted a team to execute the operation for seizure of the essential items from various dumping sites of District Khuzdar, starting on 4 April 2023.

Customs intelligence, Gwadar, seized an aggregate 41,883 bags of Urea fertilizer worth Rs167.53m and 44,957 bags of Sugar worth Rs224.78m.

These operations during the last weekend have successfully foiled an attempt to smuggle to Afghanistan huge quantities of 86,840 bags of essential commodities with a cumulative worth Rs392.31m which is a severe blow to the smuggling mafia.

Furthermore, customs Intelligence, Rawalpindi, seized high-value items like smuggled Almonds, Cashew Nuts, Walnuts, Cigarettes, Tea etc. valuing Rs30m.

Moreover, customs intelligence Karachi, recovered 2.2m sticks of smuggled cigarettes and 0.3m pouches of Indian-origin gutka and shisha flavor. The total value of the seized goods is Rs61.3m.

It is pertinent to highlight that the godowns from where the abovementioned smuggled goods have been recovered in Karachi and Rawalpindi are located in densely populated areas of Karachi.

The Director General assured the Chairman FBR that no stone will be left unturned in eradicating smuggling in the country in line with the policy of the Federal government.

The Directorate General Customs Intelligence shows strong resolve to deal with the smugglers with iron hands. The visit of the Chairman is also a strong message to the smugglers that smuggling will not be tolerated in any area of the country.
