Electricity generation increases by 23% MoM in May 2023

June 20, 2023 (MLN): The total power generation in the country increased by 23% MoM to 12,284 GWh during May 2023 as compared to 10,010 GWh in the corresponding month, monthly power production data released by the National Electric Power Authority (NEPRA) showed.

On the other hand, on a yearly basis, the total power generation decreased by 16% YoY for May 2023 compared to 14,657 in the corresponding period last year.

Cumulatively, during 11MFY23, power generation witnessed a drop of 10% YoY to 115,876 GWh against 129, 317 GWh recorded in the corresponding period last fiscal year.

The fall in power generation is attributed to the recent flood, lower industrial demand, and surge in tariff rate.

Source-wise, during the month of May 2023, RFO, RLNG, and hydel went down by 81%, 11%, and 8% YoY, respectively. On the flip side, coal and solar generation are inclined by 2% and 38%, YoY, respectively.

Furthermore, power generation from nuclear is 13% YoY standing at 1,543 GWh at Rs1.15/kWh fuel cost, and solar-based energy contributed about 1% YoY or 124 GWh.

The bagasse and gas contributed about 1% YoY (75 GWh) and 10% (1,271 GWh) of the electricity respectively during the month at a price of Rs5.98/kWh and Rs12.45/kWh respectively.

On the fuel side, the cost increased by 6% YoY in 11MFY23 to Rs9.30 per unit, compared to Rs8.76 per unit in the same period last year.

While on a sequential basis, it inched down by 5% in May 2023 to Rs9.72 per unit as compared to Rs10.24 per unit in April 2023.

In 11MFY23, the highest increase was witnessed in RFO up by 44%, RLNG by 44%, and coal by 21% respectively.
