September 20, 2023 (MLN): The total power generation in the country increased by 14% YoY to 15,959 GWh during August 2023 as compared to 14,053 GWh in the same period last year, monthly power production data released by the National Electric Power Authority (NEPRA) showed.

On a monthly basis, the total power generation increased by 8% MoM for August 2023 compared to 14,839 GWh in the corresponding month.

Source-wise, during the month of August 2023, Hydel, gas, coal, and solar went up by 9%, 8%, 8% and 12% MoM, respectively.

Similarly, generation through RFO and Wind surged by 2.20x and 47% MoM during the review month.

On the flip side, RLNG, nuclear, and bagasse generation went down by 6%, 3%, and 5% MoM, respectively.

Share-wise, power generation through hydel contributed the largest in August 2023, as it accounted for 38% (6,006 GWh) of total electricity.

It is pertinent to note that this month's hydel-based electricity generation has marked a new all-time high of 6,006 GWh.

With a share of 17%, power generation from RLNG was around 2,741 GWh at Rs23.71/ kWh fuel cost, whereas, coal contributed 15% (2,357 GWh) of electricity at a price of Rs11.02/kWh.

Meanwhile, nuclear-based power plants generated around 2,040 GWh (13% of total generation) at the fuel cost of Rs1.17/ kWh.

Fuel mix improved as generation from cheaper fuels i.e. Hydel and nuclear increased.

As a result fuel cost went down by 18% YoY to Rs8.27/kWh in August 2023, compared to Rs10.06/kWh in the SPLY.

On a sequential basis, the fuel cost went down by 1% in August 2023 compared to Rs8.34/kWh in July 2023.
