Electricity generation decreases by 4.7% YoY in December 2022

January 22, 2023 (MLN): Total Power generation in the country decreased by 4.7% YoY to 8,417 GWh during December 2022 as compared to 8,828 GWh in the corresponding period last year, monthly power production data released by the National Electric Power Authority (NEPRA) showed.

Cumulatively, during 6MFY23, power generation witnessed a drop of 7.8% YoY to 68,570 GWh against 74,396 GWh recorded in the corresponding period last fiscal year.

Source-wise during the month of December 2022, RFO, coal, RLNG, and hydel went down by 89%, 27.7%, 3.2%, and 2.7% YoY, respectively. On the other hand, solar generation is inclined by 54.4% YoY.

Share-wise, power generation in nuclear was increased in December 2022, as it accounted for 27.1% YoY as compared to 17.5% in December 2021.

The fall in power generation is attributed to the recent flood, lower industrial demand, and surge in tariff rate.

Furthermore, power generation from nuclear is 47.5% YoY standing at 2,285 GWh at Rs1.07/kWh fuel cost, and solar-based energy contributed about 54.4% YoY or 69 GWh.

The bagasse and gas contributed about 6.4% YoY (101 GWh) and 4.8% (1,274 GWh) of the electricity respectively during the month at a price of Rs5.97/kWh and Rs10.50/kWh respectively.

On the fuel side, the cost increased by 27.8% YoY in 6MFY23 to Rs9.13 per unit, as compared to Rs7.14 per unit in the same period last year.

Month on Month it decreased by 17.6% in December 2022 to Rs7.04 per unit as compared to Rs5.99 per unit in November 2022.

In 6MFY23, the highest increase was witnessed in RFO up by 84.5%, RLNG by 66.9%, Import Iran by 66.3%, and coal by 63% respectively.
