August 30, 2023 (MLN): As a caretaker government, it is crucial to ensure compliance with all agreements signed with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) by the legitimate government, caretaker Finance Minister Dr Shamshad Akhtar said while talking to journalists on Wednesday.

She also stressed the importance of social safety net provisions, including financial inclusion and support for the poor.

"The government is actively pursuing the enhancement of support for small and medium enterprises," she added.

While rejecting the baseless claims, she said that there is no doubt that people are being affected and "I have never stated that we do not care about them,” she noted.

The government further highlighted that our expectations must be managed, as policies of this duration cannot be altered easily.

Macroeconomic stability should be our primary focus. Fiscal stability serves as the foundation for economic stability, and without effective management of fiscal stability, achieving a stable monetary policy is unlikely, she further noted.

She also mentioned that conversations with the IMF have taken place at the staff level, during which the government assured continuity of the agreements made by their predecessors.
