July 01, 2025 (MLN): Pakistan has assumed the Presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the month of July 2025, marking a significant leadership moment during its eighth term (2025–26) as an elected member of the Council.
In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said Pakistan accepts this responsibility “with humility, conviction and profound commitment to the UN Charter, international law, and multilateralism.”
The presidency came at a time when conflicts and humanitarian crises are escalating across various regions, adding urgency to the Security Council’s mandate to uphold global peace and security.
Ishaq Dar shared that under Pakistan’s presidency, he will chair two high-level signature events.
The first will focus on maintaining international peace and security through multilateralism and the peaceful settlement of disputes.
The second will address strengthening cooperation between the UN and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
He is also scheduled to preside over the quarterly open debate on Palestine, a session expected to draw significant international attention amid the continuing humanitarian situation in Gaza and the West Bank.
“Pakistan looks forward to working with all UN members to pursue inclusive, balanced, and action-oriented outcomes,” Dar noted.
Pakistan’s assumption of the presidency indicates its enduring engagement with the UN system and its commitment to fostering dialogue, diplomacy, and peaceful dispute resolution at the global level.
In a separate statement, Foreign Office Spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan emphasized that Pakistan has always championed dialogue and diplomacy as essential tools for resolving global issues.
He noted that Pakistan brings to the Security Council a principled, objective and balanced outlook, informed by its foreign policy priorities, previous experience on the Council, and its longstanding contributions to international peace and security through UN peacekeeping and peace-building missions.
The spokesperson added that Pakistan has followed a transparent, inclusive and consultative process in shaping the Security Council’s Programme of Work for the month of July.
He also mentioned Pakistan’s awareness of the complex, interlinked challenges to peace and security spanning the Middle East, South Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America and beyond.
Given the immense human toll of these crises, he stressed the need for a Security Council that is responsive, credible and effective.
