Punjab government to bring 16.5mn acres under wheat cultivation

November 3, 2022 (MLN): The Punjab government plans to use all available resources to bring 16.5 million acres under wheat cultivation this month in Punjab, a press release issued on Thursday showed.

“Wheat cultivation in rainfed areas has been 64% completed and the process of wheat cultivation in irrigated areas is in progress”, Ahmad Aziz Tarar, Secretary Agriculture Punjab said.

Furthermore, he directed that wheat cultivation in rainfed areas must be completed as soon as possible and in irrigated areas the wheat cultivation process should be accelerated through community mobilization.

In addition, it is necessary to accelerate wheat cultivation in paddy areas in order to cultivate wheat on the maximum area as soon as possible, he added.

Moreover, farmers of flood affected areas are also provided with free seeds of selected varieties of wheat, whereas 0.9 million bags of certified seeds of selected varieties are being provided at Rs1200 per bag and herbicides subsidy.

Also the wheat support price was increased up to Rs3000 per 40kg before the sowing of wheat to make it profitable for farmers to cultivate wheat.

Secretary Agriculture Punjab assured that field staff of the agriculture extension will help farmers in every possible way for speedy wheat cultivation in maximum area so that the food security situation in the country will become satisfactory.

Under the "Grow More Wheat" project, we guide farmers through electronic and digital media and will use short videos relate to latest production technology of wheat and these are also being conveyed to the farmers through social media.

Alongside, Secretary Agriculture directed that wheat production competitions is going to be organize at Provincial, Division and Tehsil level this year to encourage the successful farmers in these competitions and cash prizes should also be given.
