September 28, 2023 (MLN): The Kot Addu Power Company (PSX: KAPCO) on Thursday clarified that the tariff petition before National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) was on unit rate (Rs/Kwh) of the efficient energy blocks, ranging from Rs28.80 to Rs30.33 on low sulphur furnace oil (LSFO), and on gas (RLNG) the unit rate (Rs/Kwh) ranges from Rs33.75 to Rs36.81, inclusive of capacity charges.
While rebutting the news items that appeared on the electronic and print media stating that KAPCO has requested the NEPRA to allow it to charge a tariff of Rs. 77.31 per unit, the company stated that these news items have incorrectly picked a single rate on high-speed diesel of a lesser efficient energy block and applied it across the entire power plant.
KAPCO has ten gas turbines with different technologies and different thermal efficiencies spread in different energy blocks.
KAPCO's power plant is the only one in Pakistan which has tri-fuel capability. That is, it can use low-sulphur furnace oil (LSFO), gas and high-speed diesel for power generation.
Hence, KAPCO's tariff petition filed before NEPRA is based on a different set of assumptions including fuel prices, technology of machines and thermal efficiencies of the respective energy blocks.
