SPI goes up slightly by 0.08%

January 7, 2022 (MLN): The Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) for the combined group recorded an increase of 0.08% WoW for the week ended January 6, 2022, weekly data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) showed on Friday.

As per the PBS inflation report, this increase was mainly on account of an upsurge in the prices of petrol, diesel and essential food items.

The combined index clocked in at 168.12 compared to 167.98 on January 6, 2022.

Likewise, the year-on-year trend observed a surge of 20.08% when the index was recorded at 140.01 a year ago, on January 7, 2021.

Out of the 51 monitored items, the average price of 25 items registered an increase in the week that include potatoes (5.23%), chicken (4.45%), bananas (2.56%), onions (2.12%), and pulse masoor (1.55%). Meanwhile, the prices of diesel jumped by 2.75% and petrol by 2.68% in a week.

On the other hand, the average price of 7 items decreased weekly including tomatoes (18.28%), chilies powdered (14.54%), eggs (2.23%), LPG (0.96%), rice irri (0.17%), wheat flour (0.06%) and mustard oil (0.05%) while the prices of 19 items remained stable.

The weekly SPI percentage change by income groups showed that SPI decreased in the first three lower income quantiles ranging between 0.1% and 0.28%. While in Q4, it remained stagnant.

The highest income quantile observed a 0.22% WoW increase in inflation.

On a yearly basis, analysis of SPI change across different income segments showed that SPI increased across all quantiles ranging between 18.35% and 21.38%.

Yearly SPI for the lowest income group increased by 21.38% while the highest income group recorded an increase of 20.24%.

The average price of sona urea stood at Rs1,935 per 50 kg bag which is 1.16% lower than last week’s price and 12.04% higher when compared to last year.

Going by the PBS report, the average cement price was recorded at Rs738 per 50 kg bag, showing no change on a weekly basis, while increasing by 25.40% YoY.
