January 16, 2024 (MLN): The total power generation in the country dropped by 8.2% YoY to 7,726 GWh during December 2023 as compared to 8,417 GWh in December 2022, monthly power production data released by the National Electric Power Authority (NEPRA) showed.
On a sequential basis, the total power generation increased by 2.4% MoM compared to 7,547 GWh in November.
On a cumulative basis, in 6MFY24, electricity generation stood at 68,984 GWh, up by 0.6% YoY compared to the generation of 68,570 in 6MFY23.
Source-wise
Generation through Hydel, Nuclear, and Coal (imported) registered a fall of 32.5%, 6.9% and 21% MoM in December, compared with the figures in November.
On the other hand, Coal (local), RLNG, gas, wind, bagasse, and solar generation all went up by 32.7%, 58.9%, 18.8%, 1.4%, 3.74x, and 24% MoM, respectively.
When compared to December 2022, generation through Nuclear, Gas, Coal (imported), Wind, bagasse and solar witnessed a major drop.
Share-wise
Power generation through hydel contributed the largest in December 2023, as it accounted for 24.1% (1,859 GWh) of total electricity.
With a share of 18.9%, power generation from Nuclear was around 1,464 GWh, whereas, local coal contributed 17% (1,310 GWh) to overall electricity generation.
Meanwhile, RLNG-based power plants generated around 1,268 GWh (16.4% of total generation).
Fuel cost
The average fuel cost surged by 43.9% YoY to Rs10.13/kWh in December 2023, compared to Rs7.04/kWh in the SPLY.
On a sequential basis, the fuel cost recorded a rise of 41.3% MoM in December 2023 compared to Rs7.17/kWh in November 2023.
During the review month, the fuel cost of RFO and local coal fell by 17.5% and 19.2% respectively.
Conversely, for all other sources, the fuel cost increased on a monthly basis.
On an annual comparison basis, fuel costs for all alternatives recorded a major increase.
However, fuel cost during 1HFY24 dropped by 10.1% YoY compared to a cost of Rs7.17/kWh in the same period last year.
