PM chairs briefing on CPEC ahead of Chinese Foreign Minister Visit

September 7, 2018 (MLN): Prime Minister Imran Khan, on Thursday September 6, 2018, chaired a briefing on China-Pakistan Economic Corridor at the Prime Minister’s Office, ahead of the first high-level visit by a Chinese official to Pakistan since the newly elected government took office.

Minister for Finance Mr. Asad Umar, Minister for Planning Makhdoom Khusro Bakhtiyar, Secretary Planning Mr. Zafar Hasan, Secretary Power Mr. Irfan Ali, Chairman NHA Mr. Jawwad Rafique Malik and senior government officers were present during the meeting. 

The Prime Minister was briefed in detail about various projects under the umbrella of China-Pakistani Economic Corridor in various sectors including, energy, infrastructure development, road and rail network, establishment of Special Economic Zones and development of Gawader.

The briefing preceded a three-day official visit to Pakistan by the Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi who will be in the country from September 7 to September 9, as announced by the spokesperson of the Chinese foreign ministry on Thursday.

“At the invitation of Pakistan’s foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, China’s State Councillor and foreign Minister Wang Yi will pay an official visit to Pakistan from September 7 to 9,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said during her regular press briefing in Beijing.

She also informed the press that besides meeting his Pakistani counterpart, Wang is likely to meet Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan and president-elect Arif Alvi and discuss the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and bilateral issues. Wang Yi will also meet the main leaders of Pakistani side and exchange views on bilateral relations, regional as well as international issues of mutual interest, Hua said.
