May 30, 2025 (MLN): Pakistan has joined the newly established International Organization for Mediation (IOMed) as a founding member, marking a significant step in the country’s commitment to peaceful dispute resolution.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar traveled to Hong Kong, China’s Special Administrative Region, to attend the signing ceremony of the IOMed Convention and to participate in a series of bilateral meetings.

The IOMed, now officially established with its headquarters in Hong Kong, is an international institution focused on resolving global conflicts through mediation, operating under the principles of the United Nations Charter.

It holds a status similar to international legal bodies like the International Court of Justice and the Permanent Court of Arbitration, as per the press release issued.

The initiative originated in 2022, when China, in collaboration with Pakistan, Indonesia, Laos, Cambodia, Serbia, Belarus, Sudan, Algeria, and Djibouti, signed a Joint Statement on the organization’s future establishment.

The goal was to institutionalize mediation as a diplomatic tool for resolving disputes amicably on the global stage.

Senator Ishaq Dar formally signed the convention on behalf of Pakistan and delivered an address at the ceremony on May 30.

His visit also includes several scheduled bilateral engagements on the sidelines of the event.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan reaffirmed the country’s dedication to upholding global peace, security, and prosperity through adherence to the UN Charter, implementation of Security Council resolutions, and respect for international law. Mediation, diplomacy, and international cooperation remain at the core of this approach.

Pakistan sees its founding membership in IOMed as a reflection of its long-standing support for peaceful conflict resolution and recognition of the organization's role in advancing global mediation efforts.

The signing event in Hong Kong was attended by senior representatives from nearly 60 countries and about 20 international organizations.
