May 17, 2025 (MLN): The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has categorically denied rumours circulating on social media regarding a supposed ban on currency notes with pen marks or handwriting from July 1, 2025.

In an official statement to Mettis Global, SBP’s Spokesperson confirmed that no such notification has been issued, and any reports or images suggesting otherwise are false and misleading.

The clarification follows a viral fake notification claiming that all marked notes would cease to be legal tender after July 1

SBP has confirmed through its Media and Press Office that this is completely fabricated.

Previously, in September 2014, the SBP had advised the public to avoid writing political slogans on currency notes, warning that such defacement is illegal and could lead to financial loss.

While political content remains unacceptable, the central bank has reiterated that currency notes with routine pen markings or handwriting are still valid.
