Microsoft quits OpenAI board

July 10, 2024 (MLN): Microsoft Corp. has given up its observer seat on OpenAI’s board as global antitrust regulators step up scrutiny of Big Tech’s influence in artificial intelligence, as Bloomberg reported.
The US software company, which has invested $13 billion in the creator of ChatGPT, sent a letter to OpenAI announcing its withdrawal from the board, Bloomberg cited a person familiar with the matter as saying.
Apple Inc., which had been expected to take up a similar role as an observer, also won’t join the board, the Financial Times reported earlier.
Last month, European regulators said they were going to survey Microsoft’s rivals about OpenAI’s exclusive use of its technology.
That underscores the mounting pressure on one of the world’s most valuable companies, which hopes to tap OpenAI’s AI services for its own Bing, Edge, and Windows platforms.
