May 31, 2025 (MLN): In a bid to minimize load shedding in Karachi, a new formula has been proposed by K-Electric CEO Moonis Alvi. Citing the primary cause of power outages, he revealed that 300 out of the city’s 2,129 feeders account for 87% of total losses.

He stated that if the government takes over these 300 feeders, K-Electric could move significantly closer to making Karachi load shedding-free.

“We are ready to supply electricity to these 300 feeders, but the government should ensure recovery from these areas,” said Alvi.

Currently, 70% of Karachi is exempt from load shedding. Alvi emphasized that the general consumer will not be affected by K-Electric’s Multi-Year Tariff.

He added that with the implementation of the Multi-Year Tariff, Karachi could become 90% load shedding-free by 2030.

By 2030, the number of consumers in the city is expected to reach 5 million, and power transmission capacity could rise to 5,000 megawatts.

Alvi also mentioned that K-Electric is working on introducing new technology to prevent electricity theft from feeders.

He warned that tampering with PMTs (Pole-Mounted Transformers) could result in technical faults that may take up to three days to fix.

Alvi offered the government assistance in managing the internal power system in these affected areas, as per the press release issued.

Furthermore, Alvi stated that K-Electric is ready to supply electricity to captive power industries by connecting them to the grid and is willing to follow the agreed timeline with the government and stakeholders for this transition.

He concluded by noting that economic activity in Karachi has increased the demand for electricity, and K-Electric currently has the capacity to supply 4,500 megawatts of power in the city.
