May 30, 2025 (MLN): To address rising input costs and climate-related challenges, a comprehensive relief package for farmers was discussed during a key meeting between Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, and the Director General of the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) at the Ministry.

The meeting focused on enhancing cooperation between the Ministry and SIFC to strengthen the agriculture sector’s role in national economic development.

Both sides held in-depth discussions on initiatives aimed at providing relief to farmers and improving sector productivity, according to the press release issued today.

Among the proposals discussed were the introduction of a transparent price mechanism to ensure fair returns for farmers and the potential reduction or removal of General Sales Tax (GST) on cotton to facilitate growers and boost production.

The livestock sector was also highlighted, with commitments made to promote it through healthcare improvements, enhanced breeding services, and value chain development.

Discussions included the possibility of a dedicated Kisan Package in the upcoming federal budget to support farmers through subsidies and incentives, compensating them for previous losses.

The Federal Minister acknowledged SIFC’s role in fostering inter-institutional coordination and pledged the Ministry’s full support in implementing reforms.

Major General Asad ur Rehman Cheema, representing SIFC, reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to enabling strategic investments and ensuring timely execution of agriculture sector initiatives.

The meeting concluded with an agreement to maintain close coordination to effectively implement the discussed policy measures for the benefit of Pakistan’s farming community.
