January 09, 2025 (MLN): The first green road Initiative was officially launched at the Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI) yesterday, marking a significant step toward creating eco-friendly urban infrastructure in Pakistan.

The project aims to integrate green technologies and sustainable practices into road construction, serving as a model for future urban development across the country, according to the press release.

Speaking at the launch event, Prime Minister's Coordinator for Climate Change, Romina Khurshid Alam, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing climate change under Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif's leadership.

She emphasized the importance of both short-term and long-term solutions to combat climate change, including renewable energy projects and the development of climate-resilient infrastructure.

Alam also highlighted the critical role of the climate initiatives led by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, which are vital to Pakistan's overall climate strategy.

“These initiatives are key to reducing our carbon footprint and advancing sustainable development,” Ms. Khurshid said.

She also underscored the importance of collaboration between the public and private sectors in achieving a more sustainable and prosperous future.

The green road initiative is seen as a symbol of Pakistan's unwavering commitment to environmental preservation and climate action.

It showcases how urban infrastructure can be designed with a focus on reducing environmental impact while enhancing the quality of life for citizens.

The project incorporates energy-efficient solutions and environmentally friendly practices to address pressing climate challenges.

Ms. Khurshid further outlined how the initiative aligns with Pakistan’s broader climate goals, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, expanding renewable energy usage, and promoting sustainable urban development.

“This marks a major step forward in creating cities that are not only economically prosperous but also environmentally responsible,” she stated.

She also acknowledged the significant role of the RCCI in launching this project, noting the crucial contribution of the business community to fostering a green economy.

“The private sector’s participation in sustainability efforts is essential to driving the economic transformation we need,” she emphasized, encouraging businesses to invest in clean technologies and adopt eco-friendly practices.

The event, attended by diplomats, environmental experts, and business leaders, marked a key milestone in the city’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions and build a more sustainable urban environment.

The green road Initiative is seen as a pioneering project that could set a national example for integrating green solutions into urban planning.
