July 18, 2023 (MLN): The total power generation in the country increased by 12% MoM to 13,715 GWh during June 2023 as compared to 12,284 GWh in the corresponding month, monthly power production data released by the National Electric Power Authority (NEPRA) showed.

On the other hand, on a yearly basis, the total power generation decreased by 1% YoY for June 2023 compared to 13,876 GWh in the corresponding period last year.

Cumulatively, during FY23, power generation witnessed a drop of 9% YoY to 129,591 GWh against 143,193 GWh recorded in the corresponding period last fiscal year amid economic contraction and higher tariffs, which led to lower electricity demand from the grid.

Source-wise, during the month of June 2023, RFO, RLNG, and Gas went down by 49%, 25%, and 21% YoY, respectively. On the flip side, Nuclear, coal and Hydel generation increased by 47%, 29%, and 23% YoY, respectively.

Furthermore, power generation from wind, bagasse, and solar stood at 597 GWh, 66 GWh, and 105 GWh respectively.

Share-wise, power generation through hydel contributed the largest in June 2023, as it accounted for 30% (4,133 GWh) of total electricity.

With a share of 19%, power generation from RLNG was around 2,544 GWh at Rs24.07/ kWh fuel cost, whereas, coal contributed 18% (2,434 GWh) of electricity at a price of Rs14.05/kWh.

Meanwhile, gas-based power plants generated around 1,171 GWh (9% of total generation) at the highest fuel cost of Rs11.74/ kWh.

Fuel mix improved as generation from cheaper fuels increased i.e. Hydel, Nuclear, and local gas, keeping fuel cost flat at 9.3/kWh.

While on a sequential basis, it inched down by 1% in June 2023 to Rs9.63 per unit as compared to Rs9.72 per unit in May 2023.

In FY23, the greatest increase was witnessed in RLNG by 32%, RFO by 31%, and coal by 30% respectively.
