December 19, 2022 (MLN): Total Power generation in the country decreased by 22% MoM to 8,367 GWh during November 2022 at a cost of Rs6 per unit, compared to 10,705 GWh in October 2022 at the cost of Rs9 per unit, monthly power production data released by the National Electric Power Authority (NEPRA) showed.

The drop in electricity production was backed by the decrease in demand due to a decline in temperature. Resultantly, lower generation from RFO, RLNG, coal, wind, hydel, and gas respectively.

Cumulatively, during 5MFY23, power generation witnessed a drop of 8% YoY to 60,153 GWh against 65,570 GWh recorded in the corresponding period last fiscal year.

The fall in power generation is attributed to recent flood, lower industrial demand, and surge in tariff rate.

Source-wise during the month of November 2022, RFO, coal, hydel, RLNG, and hydel generation went down by 93%, 29%, 16%, 12%, and 10% YoY, respectively. On the other hand, nuclear generation is inclined by 57% YoY.

Share-wise, power generation in RFO was negated in November 2022, as it accounted for 93% MoM (11 GWh) as compared to (157 GWh) in October 2022.

Furthermore, power generation from nuclear is 57% YoY standing at 2,338 GWh at Rs1.1/kWh fuel cost, and solar-based energy contributed about 56% YoY or 79 GWh.

The bagasse and gas contributed about 28% YoY (70 GWh) and 7% (1,169 GWh) of the electricity respectively during the month at a price of Rs6/kWh and Rs10.8/kWh respectively.

While the fuel cost surged by 35% YoY in 5MFY23 to Rs9.42 per unit, as compared to Rs7 per unit in the same period last year.

In 5MFY23, the highest increase was witnessed in furnace oil up by 87%, coal by 82%, and 74%, and gas by 28.6% respectively.

The jump in fuel cost is attributed to PKR devaluation, and higher commodity prices due to Russia-Ukraine war.

Meanwhile, on monthly basis it decreased by 34% in November 2022 to Rs6 per unit as compared to Rs9 per unit in October 2022.
