September 05, 2022 (MLN): Cotton arrivals at the ginneries as of September 1, 2022, posted a decline of 14.04% as it has dropped to 1.54 million bales, compared to the arrival of 1.79mn bales till September 01, 2021, data released by Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association showed.

The significant decrease in cotton output clearly reflects the aftermaths of deadly floods which have reportedly put a devastating impact on the cotton crop.

Finance Minister Miftah Ismail on Monday told CNN, “As a result of the devastating impact of flood, the cotton crops have completely destroyed.”

This drastic reduction is indicating a shortfall of around 4mn bales that needs to be imported in order to keep the operations of the textile sector smooth.

The data further revealed that cotton arrivals of 0.835mn bales have arrived at the ginneries of Sindh while 0.704mn bales reached Punjab-based ginneries.

Sanghar, being one of the largest cotton-producing districts in the country recorded the highest cotton arrivals as the ginneries located there received 0.612mn bales. Cotton output from Khanewal stood at 0.131mn bales while ginneries in Vehari reported the arrival of 0.103mn cotton bales.

Meanwhile, 1.32mn bales were being sold to the textile sector whereas exporters did not make any purchases. Resultantly, 79,495 bales remained unsold during the period.
