Car sales plunge by 50% YoY in August

September 13, 2022 (MLN): The passenger car sales witnessed a notable decline of 50% YoY in the month of August 2022, clocking in at 8,980 units, when compared to 17,899 units recorded in the same month last fiscal year due to higher interest rates, measures taken by the regulators to curb auto imports and cost-led price hikes, the latest data from the Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA) showed on Tuesday.

On a sequential basis, the total sales of passenger cars witnessed a decline of 13% from 10,378 units in July 2022.

This takes the cumulative car sales to 19,358 units during 2MFY23, down by 50% YoY.

Going by the details made available by PAMA, the '1300 cc and above' category took a lead as auto sales stood at 5,684 units in August 2022, showing a decline of 22% YoY as opposed to 7,247 units in August 2021. Segment-wise, Toyota Corolla and Yaris saw the highest sales at 2,901 units, followed by Honda Cars (Civic and City) with 1,436 units sold in the said month. Suzuki Swift recorded sales at 532 units in August 2022 while Hyundai Elantra and Sonata witnessed sale of 581 units and 234 units respectively.

The second-highest number of sales was made within the 'below 1000 cc' category, standing at 2,520 units, down by 59% YoY.  Within this category, Suzuki Alto registered sales of 2,293 units, followed by Suzuki Bolan with 227 units. Suzuki Swift recorded sales at 321 units in July 2022. Surprisingly, no units of Hyundai Elantra and Sonata were sold, leaving adequate inventory levels at the end of July 2022.

The ‘1000cc' category took the third spot as the units sold in August 2022 were only 776 the volumetric sales dropped sharply by 83% YoY. Within this category, Suzuki Cultus recorded the highest sales at 411 units, followed by Suzuki WagonR which sold 365 units.

Meanwhile, the sales of trucks were recorded at 295 units in August 2022, registering a decline of 47% YoY. Isuzu emerged as the best-selling truck, with sales of around 170 units during the month, followed by MASTER with 70 units. HINO and JAC made sales of 43 units and 12 units, respectively.

The sale of buses saw a drop of 8% YoY to 46 units. Within this segment, HINO made the maximum sales at 31 units while Master recorded sales of 15 and Isuzu made no sales.

According to the data, LCVs, Vans, and Jeeps observed sales of 2,665 units, down by 31% during the period under review.

Overall, 2/3-wheeler sales were recorded at 101,676 units in August 2022 as compared to 150,225 units in the same month in FY22, down by 32% YoY.

Category-wise, Honda, Suzuki, Road Prince Motorcycle, United Auto Motorcycle, and Yamaha sales dropped by 15%, 16%, 69%, 75%, and 48% YoY, to 85,023, 3,455, 3,173, 7,598, and 1,242 units respectively in the said month.
