Weekly SPI increases by 0.95%

July 11, 2025 (MLN): The Weekly Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) for the Combined Group increased by 0.95% WoW during the week ended July 10, 2024, while on YoY basis, it decreased 1.23% compared to the corresponding period from last year.

According to data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), the Combined Index was at 315.03 compared to 312.06 a week earlier, while the index was recorded at 318.96 a year ago.


During the week, out of 51 items, prices of 19 (37.25%) items increased, 06 (11.77%) items decreased and 26 (50.98%) items remained stable.

Notable weekly gains were seen in chicken (up 22.61%), tomatoes (13.45%), onions (6.25%), potatoes (2.79%), garlic (2.36%), sugar (1.90%), gur (1.89%) and broken basmati rice (0.84%).

In contrast, prices eased for LPG (-2.56%), mustard oil (-0.81%), pulse moong (-0.41%), cooking oil 5 litres (-0.20%), while wheat flour and vegetable ghee each dipped marginally by (-0.02%).

Overall, of the 51 essential items monitored, prices of 19 items (37.25%) rose, 6 items (11.77%) declined, and 26 items (50.98%) remained stable during the week.

On an annual basis, the SPI showed a decline of 1.23%. This was mainly due to sharp drops in onions (-50.04%), tomatoes (-45.66%), electricity charges (-37.62%), garlic (-22.80%), wheat flour (-22.19%), pulse mash (-20.46%), branded tea (-17.93%), potatoes (-12.97%), pulse masoor (-9.37%) and diesel (-1.58%).

Meanwhile, substantial yearly increases were recorded in ladies sandals (+55.62%), sugar (+29.17%), pulse moong (+18.89%), beef (+14.71%), chicken (+13.77%), gur (+12.66%), vegetable ghee (+12.46%), firewood (+10.44%), powdered milk (+9.41%), printed lawn fabric (+7.89%) and shirting cloth (+7.31%).

The weekly SPI percentage change by income groups showed that SPI increased across all quantiles ranging 0.88% and 1.10%.

The lowest income group experienced a weekly rise of 0.88%, while the highest income group experienced a rise of 1.06%.

On a yearly basis, analysis of SPI change across different income segments showed that SPI increased across all quantiles ranging between 13.41% and 22.23%.

Yearly SPI for the Lowest Income Group decreased by 0.04% while the highest income group recorded an increase of 2.79%.

The average price of Sona urea stood at Rs4,429 per 50 kg bag which is 0.12% and 6.91% lower than last week's and last year's price, respectively. 

Meanwhile, the average Cement price surged further to Rs1,402 per 50 kg bag, which is 0.10% and 2.14% lower than the previous week's and year's price, respectively.
