September 26, 2025 (MLN): Pakistan’s domestic mobile phone manufacturing and assembly witnessed a steep slowdown in August 2025, with production plunging 46% month-on-month to 1.94 million units from 3.59 million in July, according to data released by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).

Industry officials attribute the sharp decline to consumers delaying purchases ahead of the September–October launch cycle of new models from global brands such as Samsung and Xiaomi.

The fall was further exaggerated by an exceptionally high base in July, when pent-up demand surged following earlier supply chain disruptions.

Despite the month’s setback, production in August still showed a healthy 30% increase compared to the same period last year, when the market was reeling from weak demand triggered by pre-buying in June 2024 ahead of the FY25 budget’s 18% GST hike.

Over the first eight months of 2025, locally assembled phones totaled 19.7 million units, down just 3% year-on-year. The sector continued to dominate the market, supplying 94% of the country’s total mobile phone demand.

Feature phones retained a narrow lead in the product mix, accounting for 51% of total output, or about 10 million units, while smartphones made up the remaining 49%, or 9.7 million units.

Market share data for 8M2025 shows VGO Tel leading the pack with 2.33 million units, followed closely by Infinix with 2.24 million.

Other top assemblers included Vivo (1.75m), Itel (1.53m), Xiaomi (1.16m), Tecno (1.09m), and Samsung (1.02m). Legacy brands QMobile (0.77m), Nokia (0.72m), and G’Five (0.71m) also secured spots among the top ten players.
