July 08, 2025 (MLN): Pakistan and Afghanistan have agreed to intensify efforts for the early finalization of the Framework Agreement for the Uzbekistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan (UAP) Railway Project, aiming to boost regional connectivity and economic integration.

This commitment was made during the inaugural round of the Additional Secretary-Level Mechanism between the two countries’ Foreign Ministries, held in Islamabad.

The meeting followed the recent visit of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar to Kabul in April 2025.

During the discussions, both sides reviewed the progress on measures outlined during Dar’s visit, particularly those aimed at facilitating Afghan transit trade.

A range of bilateral issues was discussed, including trade and transit cooperation, security, and broader connectivity initiatives, according to the press release issued.

The two countries acknowledged terrorism as a grave threat to regional peace and security.

The Pakistani delegation stressed the need for concrete action against terrorist groups operating from Afghan territory, pointing out that such entities pose direct risks to Pakistan's security and the region’s development prospects.

A key topic of discussion was the movement and repatriation of Afghan nationals.

Pakistan highlighted its facilitation of documented cross-border movement, noting that since January 2024, it has issued over 500,000 visas across various categories, including medical, tourism, business, and education.

Both delegations agreed on the importance of strengthening the legal movement of individuals across borders.

They emphasized that enhanced regional connectivity could serve as a powerful engine for sustainable economic growth and shared prosperity.

The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of mutual commitment to sustained engagement, joint action on common challenges, and recognition that lasting security is essential for the development and advancement of bilateral relations.
