August 22, 2025 (MLN): Pakistan is set to benefit from a $3 million
low-carbon agriculture project being mapped out by the Asian Development Bank
(ADB) to tackle environmental and agricultural challenges.
The project, developed
in collaboration with the University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF), will
focus on seed breeding, greenhouse gas emissions reduction mechanisms, and
high-tech agricultural operations, as reported by APP.
This was shared during
a meeting at UAF’s Syndicate Room, where ADB Senior Natural Resources
Specialist Noriko Sato met Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC)
Chairperson Prof Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan, UAF Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Zulfiqar Ali,
and UAF scientists.
Participants also paid
tribute to Sato’s remarkable contributions to Pakistan’s agriculture sector.
Sato reaffirmed ADB’s
commitment to Pakistan’s inclusive, sustainable, and climate-resilient
development through investments in food security, energy, transportation, urban
services, and institutional capacity building.
Prof Dr Iqrar Ahmad
Khan said environmental degradation, water scarcity, and low productivity
demand urgent research-based solutions.
He added that ADB’s
past collaborations with UAF have produced tangible results in addressing
climate change and agricultural challenges.
Prof Dr Zulfiqar Ali
stressed that as an agrarian country, Pakistan’s poverty alleviation and
economic stability are directly tied to innovations in agriculture.
He noted that UAF has
already completed around 20 technical assistance and five R&D projects with
ADB, strengthening global partnerships to transform agriculture through
research and technology.
The meeting was also
attended by UAF deans, the ORIC director, registrar, treasurer, and scientists
associated with previous ADB projects.
