August 19, 2025 (MLN): Pakistan took a major step in its digital transformation with the launch of the URAAN AI Techathon 1.0, a flagship initiative under the Ministry of Planning, Development & Special Initiatives (MoPDSI)’s URAAN Pakistan National Innovation Mission.

The event aims to mobilize the country’s brightest minds to harness artificial intelligence (AI) for solving real-world challenges and accelerating national development, according to a press release issued yesterday.

At the inaugural ceremony, Federal Minister for Planning, Development & Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal said the Techathon is not just a competition but a movement to empower youth and transform key sectors of the economy.

He stressed that AI has already become central to shaping economies worldwide, influencing decisions in health, education, agriculture, industry, and governance.

“Pakistan will not remain a spectator in the AI revolution but will emerge as a rising leader,” the Minister said, adding that the government is committed to ensuring stability, policy continuity, and reforms as the basis for sustainable progress.

To support the initiative, the government has launched a dedicated online portal for the Techathon, serving as a central hub for registrations, resources, and event coordination.

Special emphasis will be placed on ensuring inclusive participation from underserved and remote regions.

The Minister highlighted that the Techathon aligns with the Vision 2025 agenda, the National AI Policy, and sectoral strategies, while also contributing to the government’s goal of transforming Pakistan into a trillion-dollar economy by 2035.

He emphasized the role of startups, universities, and technology parks in building a robust AI ecosystem, noting that AI integration is already being advanced through curricula, training programs, and Centers of Excellence.

Ahsan Iqbal urged young innovators to step forward, experiment, and showcase their creativity, saying Pakistan’s youth have the same energy and potential as those in the world’s leading technology hubs.
