September 10, 2025 (MLN): Pakistan reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening small and medium enterprises (SMEs) as engines of sustainable growth.

During the 8th official Meeting of the D-8 Governmental Bodies on SMEs, held virtually alongside the group’s first online session, special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production, Mr. Haroon Akhtar Khan, represented Pakistan, accompanied by Secretary of Industries and Production, Mr. Saif Anjum, and CEO of SMEDA, Mr. Suqrat Aman.

The Developing-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation (D-8), which includes Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Türkiye, has been working since 1997 to expand trade, improve living standards, and foster collaboration in agriculture, energy, tourism, industry, and SME development.

The recent establishment of the D-8 SME Center in Abuja, Nigeria, marks a milestone in promoting innovation, digital trade, and capacity-building among member states.

In his remarks, Mr. Khan emphasized Pakistan’s resolve, under the vision of Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, to transform SMEs into drivers of inclusive industrial growth.

He noted that SMEs contribute nearly 40% of GDP in developing economies and are vital for job creation, innovation, and poverty reduction.

Highlighting Pakistan’s strengths in textiles, surgical goods, IT, and sports manufacturing, he said the country is focused on enhancing competitiveness while addressing challenges of financing, technology gaps, and market access.

“SMEs are the backbone of our economy and the foundation for regional economic integration,” he added.

Secretary Industries, Mr. Saif Anjum, stressed that the D-8 platform allows member states to participate more effectively in global value chains, paving the way for greater industrial collaboration.

The meeting reaffirmed SMEs’ role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and agreed on measures to boost financing access, promote digital transformation, adopt eco-friendly practices, and empower youth and women entrepreneurs.

Pakistan reiterated its resolve to advance regional economic diplomacy while positioning SMEs as a central pillar of growth, competitiveness, and sustainable development.
