Pakistan demands unified global action

June 05, 2026 (MLN): As the global community marks World Environment Day today, Pakistan’s top leadership has issued a stark warning and an urgent call to action.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif
have emphasized that climate change is no longer a distant threat but a harsh,
daily reality for millions of Pakistanis.
Aligning with this year's global emphasis on Climate Action, under the United Nations Environment Programme's (UNEP) overarching 2026 campaign theme, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.”, both leaders reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to international climate goals while demanding equitable global responsibility.
Despite contributing less than 1% to global greenhouse gas emissions, Pakistan remains disproportionately trapped on the frontlines of the climate crisis.
In his message, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif pointed out that
the proof of the planet's ecological imbalance is hitting Pakistan directly
through severe, interconnected environmental disasters.
“Devastating floods, prolonged droughts, extreme heatwaves,
melting glaciers, water scarcity, and worsening air pollution provide
compelling evidence that climate change is a stark reality affecting millions
of lives across the globe,” the Prime Minister stated.
The human and economic toll of these recurring disasters has severely strained Pakistan's developing economy, forcing the state to focus heavily on disaster response rather than sustainable growth.
Both leaders outlined key strategic pillars to build a more
resilient nation, urging citizens, industries, and agricultural stakeholders to
treat environmental protection as a sacred national duty.
1. Ecosystem Restoration & Forestry
President Zardari stated that Pakistan will continue pushing for aggressive ecosystem restoration and biodiversity preservation.
He called
on citizens to aggressively combat deforestation and protect wildlife. The
government is aiming to scale up nature-based solutions to create natural
buffers against extreme weather events.
2. Water and Energy Resource Management
With water scarcity looming as a major national security threat, the President and Prime Minister both highlighted the critical need for responsible water consumption and advanced climate-smart agriculture.
Transitioning to renewable energy sources remains a top government policy
priority to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
3. Activating the Youth
Prime Minister Sharif placed immense faith in Pakistan’s
younger demographic, calling them the backbone of a greener tomorrow.
- Empowerment:
Equipping the youth with green technologies and environmental education.
- Innovation: Cultivating an indigenous spirit of innovation to tackle local waste and energy crises.
Globally, World Environment Day 2026 is officially hosted by the Republic of Azerbaijan, with major events centered in Baku.
The UN's #NowForClimate campaign stresses that nature itself holds the blueprint for climate solutions, whether through wetlands that absorb storm surges or forests that cool the planet.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated that because environmental degradation knows no borders, international cooperation is indispensable.
Pakistan intends to hold major polluting nations accountable on the global stage, demanding that climate finance pledges be fulfilled to help
vulnerable states adapt.
The day wrapped up with a collective call to action for everyday Pakistanis: to change daily habits, reduce single-use waste, conserve energy, and actively participate in local tree-planting drives to preserve the country for future generations.
