August 7,2025 (MLN): Pakistan and Iraq have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to launch a ferry service between Gwadar Port and Iraq’s Umm Qasr Port.

This marked a significant step toward strengthening maritime cooperation and regional connectivity.

The agreement was reached during a meeting between Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry and a delegation from the Iraqi Embassy, led by Deputy Head of Mission Abdulqadir Sulyman Alhimiri.

The Minister emphasized the potential for the ferry service to support both economic growth and religious travel by describing the initiative as a new chapter in bilateral relations.

In 2024, over 88,000 Pakistani pilgrims visited Iraq for Ashura, a growing trend that both nations saw as a strong base for regular sea connectivity.

Pakistan also expressed interest in supplying Iraq with Potassium Sulphate from an existing facility in the Gwadar Free Zone, as well as expanding exports of medicines, meat, and rice. In return, it aims to increase Iraqi oil imports.

Trade between the two countries currently remains modest, with Pakistan’s exports to Iraq totaling $54.29 million and imports mainly petroleum products reaching $145.46m in FY2024.

Minister Junaid Anwar Chaudhry also sought Iraq’s support for Pakistan’s upcoming candidacy in the International Maritime Organization (IMO) elections and received assurances of backing.

The ferry service is part of Pakistan’s broader plan to expand maritime routes with Iran and GCC countries, aligning with its blue economy strategy to boost port activity, logistics, and regional trade.

Technical teams from both sides will be conducting feasibility studies and evaluate investment requirements.
