September 7, 2025 (MLN): The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a warning of urban flooding in parts of Sindh, Balochistan, and Southern Punjab due to heavy rainfall expected in the coming days.

According to the advisory, south-eastern Sindh is likely to experience heavy rain till Wednesday, which may result in urban flooding in low lying coastal districts.

In Balochistan, flash floods are anticipated in the streams of Lasbela and Khuzdar within the Kirthar ranges.

The NDMA further cautioned that heavy to very heavy rainfall is predicted in several locations across the Sulaiman range and Southern Punjab, raising the risk of increased water flow in rivers and streams.

Authorities have urged the public to avoid crossing rivers and streams during this period and to strictly follow the instructions of local administrations to ensure safety.

This warning comes as Karachi, the country’s largest metropolis, is still struggling to recover from the devastation caused by last month’s torrential rains.

The downpour had overwhelmed the city’s fragile infrastructure, leaving at least eight people dead, crippling traffic, disrupting electricity, and submerging key roads.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, localities such as Saadi Town, Gulshan-i-Hadeed, the Airport Old Area, Nazimabad, Surjani Town, DHA Phase VII, and University Road had recorded rainfall ranging between 130mm and 176mm during that spell.

The National Disaster Management Authority had also warned that the monsoon activity was likely to persist until the end of the month, while federal and provincial authorities scrambled to coordinate relief efforts.

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif had assured Sindh of full federal support during the emergency, as Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah declared a public holiday and suspended schools across the province.

The repeated episodes of urban flooding have once again exposed Karachi’s vulnerability to climate shocks and its inadequate drainage infrastructure, stressing the urgent need for sustainable urban planning and climate resilience investments in Pakistan’s commercial hub.
