February 17, 2023 (MLN): In a major development for Pakistan's energy sector, the 330 MW Mine-Mouth Coal-Fired Power Generation Complex at Thar Block II, District Tharparkar by ThalNova Power Thar (Private) Limited (TN) has reached its Commercial Operations Date (COD) on February 17, 2023, The Hub Power Company Limited (HUBCO) informed through a notice to PSX today.

This is in terms of the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) dated July 21, 2017, entered into between TN and the Central Power Purchasing Agency (Guarantee) Limited.

To note, TN is a joint venture between Hub Power Holdings Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of HUBCO, Thal Power (Private) Limited, Nova Powergen Limited, CMEC ThalNova Power Investments Limited, and Descon Engineering Limited, formed for the purposes of establishing a 330 MW Mine-Mouth Coal-Fired Power Generation Complex at Thar Block II, District Tharparkar, Sindh, Pakistan under the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

The development marks a significant milestone in the country's efforts to enhance its energy security and reduce its dependence on expensive imported fuel. This will enable the complex to start generating low-cost energy from indigenous Thar Coal, reducing the burden on the national foreign exchange resources.

The completion of the project was made possible by the combined efforts of the government of Pakistan, the government of Sindh, the government of China, and all private stakeholders.

The project's success highlights the importance of collaborative efforts between the public and private sectors to achieve sustainable development and create a more prosperous future for the country.

The addition of the Thar Block II complex to the HUBCO group's power generation capacity brings their total output to 3,581 MW. This power will be generated from plants spread across Baluchistan, Punjab, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Sindh.

The Thar Block II project's success is a significant achievement for Pakistan's energy sector and represents a critical step towards meeting the country's growing energy needs while simultaneously reducing its reliance on expensive imported fuel.

With the country's continued investment in the energy sector and collaborative efforts between the public and private sectors, Pakistan is poised to achieve sustainable economic growth and development in the years to come.
