Power generation rises 2.7% YoY in May 2024

June 20, 2024 (MLN): The total power generation in the country increased by 2.7% YoY to 12,618 GWh during May 2024 as compared to 12,284 GWh in the same month of last year.

According to the monthly electricity generation data released by National Electric Power Authority (NEPRA), the total power generation increased by 46.0% MoM compared to 8,640 GWh in April 2024.

On a cumulative basis, in 11MFY24, electricity generation stood at 114,382 GWh, down 1.3% YoY compared to the generation of 115,877 in 11MFY23.

The average fuel cost for power generation declined by 10.0% YoY to Rs8.74/KWh in May 2024 compared to Rs9.72/KWh during May 2023.

On a monthly basis, fuel cost fell  by 5.0%.

Generation through Coal, RFO, Gas, RLNG, Mixed, Wind, and Bagasse registered a year-on-year decrease of 14.9%, 74.3%, 12.7%, 8%, 100%, 26.6%, and 23.9% respectively in May, compared with the figures in same month of last year.

On the other hand, production of Hydel, Nuclear, Import from Iran, and Solar jumped by 17.9%, 53%, 44.9%, and 0.8% YoY, respectively.

Share-wise, Hydel held the majority share of electricity generation during the month, clocking in at 31.0%

This was followed by RLNG with 21.8%, Nuclear with 18.7%, Coal with 13.9%, and Gas with 8.8%.

Cumulatively, Hydel took the lead in electricity generation with a share of 30.6% in 11MFY24. Nuclear followed at 19.2%, with RLNG contributing 18.5%, Coal at 15.7%, and Gas at 0.0937422889932845.
