March 15, 2024 (MLN): In a significant development, Pakistan has improved its rank in the United Nations Human Development Index to 161st place out of 191 countries, compared to its rank of 164th on the index last year.
According to the latest report of the UN Development Program, Pakistan now ranks 161st with 0.544 points.
Last year, the nation contributed 0.540 points to the index.
The Human Development Index (HDI) is a summary measure of average achievement in key dimensions of human development: a long and healthy life, being knowledgeable and having a decent standard of living.
The HDI is the geometric mean of normalized indices for each of the three dimensions.
Moreover, the report assesses the dangerous gridlock resulting from uneven development progress, intensifying inequality, and escalating political polarization, that we must urgently tackle.
It also emphasizes how global interdependence is being reconfigured and proposes a path forward where multilateralism plays a pivotal role.
