President of Iran said the country is prepared to supply Pakistan’s needs for energy and to construct power plants across the border areas to export electricity to its neighbor.
“We are ready to supply energy to Pakistan, and also welcome the Pakistani investors in this sphere,” President Hassan Rouhani said in a meeting with Prime Minister of Pakistan Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, held on the sidelines of UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday evening.
They discussed strengthening of relations between two countries and issues of regional peace and security. The president also said Iran is prepared to construct power plants in areas bordering Pakistan by joint investment with other countries and export electricity to Pakistan.
He further described border security as a requisite for enhancement of bilateral relations, saying Islamabad government is expected to detect and disband the terrorist groups that carry out attacks on Iranian borders from inside Pakistan.
For his part, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said Pakistan is trying to settle Iran’s concerns about the borders and has deployed Army troops to frontiers to ensure security.
He also called for expansion of economic, security and regional cooperation between two neighbors. Prime Minister stated that pursuing a policy of peaceful neighborhood, Pakistan was committed to strengthen relations with Iran which were rooted in common history, culture and people to people ties. He said that the increased high-level engagements between the two countries was contributing to deepening of mutually beneficial cooperation in diverse fields.
He emphasized on the need of maintaining this positive trajectory in bilateral relations for promoting trade and economic cooperation.
In recent years, there have been sporadic incidents on Iran-Pakistan border with terrorist elements operating inside Pakistan launching cross-border attacks. However, the two countries have been working to enhance security in the region.
In a latest such incident, a cross-border terrorist attack from inside Pakistan took place on April 26, in which ten Iranian servicemen were killed on duty in Mirjaveh, the province of Sistan and Baluchistan.
The two leaders also exchanged views about efforts for peace and stability in Afghanistan. They agreed that there was no military solution to the Afghan conflict and a politically negotiated settlement was vital for achieving lasting peace in Afghanistan. Underscoring that Afghanistan’s neighboring countries were seriously affected by the growing instability in Afghanistan, they emphasized the need for adopting a regional approach for bringing an end to the prolonged Afghan conflict.
Prime Minister and the Iranian President expressed deep concern over the atrocities being committed against Rohingya Muslims and urged the international community to take urgent measures to alleviate the suffering of these people.
